Do I Lie?

Do you think, or
Are you thought, or
Are you thoughts?
Are you caught?

Do you breath, or
Are you breath, or
Are you breathed?
Is there death?

Do you age, or
Do you climb, or
Are you always?
Is there time?

Do I lie, or
Do I rhyme, or
Do I hide
Behind thoughts on line?

  1. There is a long tradition in English poetry that language itself is perjured, that it lies, and this can lead one further back to the Platonic tradition in the West or the Taoist tradition in the East – there are Forms, and the form that can be named is not the actual Form. I find your poem points to both of these limitations of living at this level of materiality.
